New Faculty Member Department of Geosciences
Artem R. Oganov joined the Stony Brook Geosciences faculty as an Associate Professor
in November 2008. He also has appointments at the Department of Physics and the New York
Center for Computational Science, and is an Adjunct Professor at Moscow State University.
He received an MSc degree from Moscow State University, followed by a PhD degree from
University College London, and a Habilitation (a European degree after PhD) at the Swiss
Federal Institute of Technology (ETH Zurich). Prior to joining Stony Brook University,
he was a Privatdozent and Group Leader at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH Zurich).
Prof. Oganov's research interests are in the fields of theoretical
and computational crystallography, mineral physics, and materials design.
One of the trademarks of his research is the combination of advanced theory
and algorithms with experiments done by his collaborators worldwide. He has
authored more than 60 publications and 1 patent, and was awarded several prestigious
scientific prizes, including the University Latsis Prize (25000 Swiss Francs) in 2006.
Oganov has given over 100 talks on topics of his research - at conferences, universities
and companies.
Prof. Oganov is passionate about science and is eager to spread his enthusiasm.
Some of the questions that he is curious about are:
"What is inside the planets and stars?"
"How the properties of planetary materials determine the structure and dynamics of planets?"
"How to predict the structure and properties of materials?"
"How to understand stablity of crystals - and their properties - from their microscopic structure?"
Several projects are currently pursued in the Oganov lab - these include (1) development of new
computer codes and algorithms for predicting materials structures and properties, (2)
simulation of matter in deep planetary interiors, (3) computational search for new materials.
His hobbies include history, boxing and cooking. He is a proud father of little Jeanne,
born on 15 June 2008.
