Thank you for your interest in graduate studies in the Geosciences Department at Stony Brook University. ONLY on-line applications will be accepted. General information and the online application can be obtained at the Graduate School website: http://www.grad.sunysb.edu/.

All supporting materials MUST be mailed directly to the Geosciences Department; not to the Graduate School. Please note that all transcripts must be mailed directly to the Geosciences Department and not to the Graduate School. Please note that we strongly encourage you to submit the recommendation letters via the online system or you may mail hard copies directly to the department.

GRE scores and the TOEFL scores:
Please request ETS (Educational Testing System) to directly report the scores to the University via the computer based system.

  • The General Examination of the GRE scores is required.
  • The Toefl scores can be no older than two years and must be a minimum of 213 (computer based test) and 550 (paper based test). iBT test minimum overall score of 90 and no sub-score can be less than 22.
Deadlines for submission of application:
For Fall Semester the deadline is January 15th for consideration for departmental support and for the Turner and Graduate Council Fellowships. Please note that for consideration of support means that the entire application packet (that is, all transcripts, recommendation letters, GRE and Toefl Scores reported) must be in the Geosciences Department by January 15th and for Spring Semester the deadline is October 1st.


Admission to the Geosciences Programs at Stony Brook University

For admission to the Graduate Program in Geosciences, the following, in addition to the Graduate School requirements, are required:
  1. A bachelor's degree in one of the earth or space sciences or in biology, chemistry, physics, mathematics, or engineering.
  2. A minimum average of B for all undergraduate coursework and a B average for courses in the sciences.
  3. Results of the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) General Test.
  4. Acceptance by both the Department and the Graduate School
In special cases, a student not meeting requirements A and B may be admitted on a provisional basis. Upon admission, the student will be informed of the requirements that must be satisfied for termination of provisional status.
