The field of earth and space sciences is a broadly based multidisciplinary science combining geology, astronomy, atmospheric science and marine science. The major in earth and space sciences leads to the Bachelor of Arts degree and is a diversified program in the natural sciences and mathematics aimed at fostering a basic understanding of the earth and space sciences; it also includes concentrated study in any one of the natural sciences or mathematics or interdisciplinary studies in environmental geoscience.
The Earth and Space Sciences major has two programs of study.

The Earth and Space Sciences track
is designed to meet
the needs of students who desire a diverse liberal arts
and sciences background. This major is particularly appropriate for
students wishing to pursue careers in law and environmental

students for certification as secondary school earth science

Course requirements-ESS Major
Below is a list of courses offered within the Department of Geosciences. Please contact the appropriate undergraduate program director or advisor for a list of which courses are required for either of the major tracks in Earth and Space Sciences or see the pdf version Stony Brook Undergraduate Bulletin-ESS. All courses offered for the major must be passed with a letter grade of C or higher. Completion of the major requires approximately 61 to 72 credits.
